A new paper that summarizes the trend in CD4-cell count at HIV diagnosis in developed countries between 1992 and 2011 shows no meaningful improvement. This finding renders many of our “when to start” debates completely irrelevant for more than half of newly diagnosed patients, whose CD4 counts are already <350 cells/mm3.
