Vulvodynia — chronic vulvar pain without identifiable cause — has been estimated to affect as many as 28% of reproductive-aged women. Researchers assessed prevalence of vulvodynia and care-seeking behaviors in symptomatic women from two distinct geographic areas in the U.S. Self-administered questionnaires were mailed to women (age range, 18–40), in the Boston metropolitan area (BMA) and Minneapolis/Saint Paul (MSP). The census-based BMA sample (5440 responses; 55% of targeted population) encompassed three ethnically diverse neighborhoods and two suburbs.
