Controversy persists about the decision, and its empirical support, in DSM-5 to continue categorizing schizoaffective disorder as a condition distinct from schizophrenia and psychotic mood disorders. In a prospective study of outcomes associated with these diagnoses, 526 patients with a hospital admission for first-episode psychosis received regular, comprehensive face-to-face and telephone clinical assessments; data also included records review and interviews of significant others. Ten-year follow-up data were available for 413 patients.
