Spironolactone is a diuretic with antiandrogenic action. Daily use provides some improvement in some adult patients with acne vulgaris. To study the effect of spironolactone on the risk for developing rosacea, investigators conducted a large population-based, case-control analysis using the U.K.-based General Practice Research Database. Each of 53,927 rosacea cases were randomly matched to one control case on the basis of age, sex, general practice, calendar time, and years of recorded history in the database. Results were adjusted for smoking, alcohol consumption, body mass, and diuretic use (15.5% of patients had received a diuretic).
