To determine the prevalence of nonmedical prescription opioid and sedative use among adolescents using the emergency department (ED), investigators surveyed patients aged 14 to 20 years presenting to a Michigan ED in 2010 and 2011.
Of 2195 adolescents surveyed (average age, 17.5; 72% white), 222 (10%) reported nonmedical prescription opioid or sedative use (185 opioid, 115 sedative, 78 both). In a multivariable analysis, adolescents reporting nonmedical prescription use of either agent had increased odds of receiving public assistance, dating violence, alcohol misuse, drinking and driving or riding with a drinking driver, marijuana use, and nonprescription cough or cold medicine misuse.
