Debate is ongoing about the relative efficacy of nonbiologic and biologic therapies for treating patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Triple therapy (hydroxychloroquine, sulfasalazine, and methotrexate) is noninferior to etanercept (Enbrel) plus methotrexate after 2 years (NEJM JW Gen Med Oct 23 2012). Researchers now consider whether the biologic agent adalimumab (Humira) plus methotrexate is more effective than methotrexate monotherapy in patients with early RA.
