Thromboembolism is one of the leading causes of maternal death in the U.S. To identify contemporary practice patterns for thromboembolism prophylaxis in cesarean deliveries, investigators used the Perspective database, which captures data from >600 acute-care hospitals and approximately 15% of all hospitalizations in the U.S. All patients who had cesarean deliveries between January 2003 and March 2010 were included.
Of 1.25 million women, 76% received no thromboembolism prophylaxis; 22% received mechanical prophylaxis only (pneumatic compression or elastic stockings); 1% received pharmacologic prophylaxis only (heparin or fondaparinux); and 1% received both mechanical and pharmacologic prophylaxis.
