To determine admission rates and use of imaging and medications for acute pediatric concussions, these authors reviewed charts for children ≤18 years who presented with concussion to 14 U.S. pediatric emergency departments (EDs) from 2001 to 2010. Diagnoses of concussion increased from 0.36% of all ED visits in 2001 to 0.62% in 2010. The number of diagnoses rose sharply in 2007, from an average increase of 147 patients per year during 2001 to 2007 to 559 patients per year from 2007 to 2010. Despite the increase in diagnoses, the number of patients admitted remained stable (525 admissions in 2001 and 555 in 2010).
