The benefits of restricting dietary sodium are well known, but many patients and physicians may not be aware of the high sodium content in dispersible, effervescent, and soluble formulations of some medications. To assess the relation between the use of such medications and risk for cardiovascular events, investigators in the U.K. conducted a nested case-control study of nearly 1.3 million adult primary-care patients who had received at least two prescriptions for sodium-containing formulations (24 medications were studied in all) or matched standard formulations of the same drugs.
