FDA Watch: Atrial Appendage Closure Device

The Watchman, a device delivered via catheter to close the left atrial appendage (NEJM JW General Medicine Aug 27 2009), has received a favorable recommendation from an FDA advisory panel, Reuters reports. The device is meant to prevent migration of clots in patients with atrial fibrillation, thus preventing strokes and avoiding the need for anticoagulation therapy.
