To compare baseline demographics and clinical characteristics between patients with ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) who walk in to the emergency department and those who are transported by emergency medical services (EMS), researchers reviewed records from one academic medical center in Los Angeles during 2009 and 2010. All 115 patients met standard STEMI criteria, and underwent primary percutaneous intervention.
EMS-transported patients (64) were older and more likely to be white, to present in cardiogenic shock, and to have left main coronary artery disease.
