Effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) provides substantial clinical benefit for HIV-infected individuals, but persistent inflammation and immune activation have been linked to increased risk for non-AIDS conditions such as heart disease and cancer. The SATURN Study was designed to evaluate the effects of rosuvastatin on cardiovascular risk, bone health, and immune activation in HIV-infected patients taking ART. Eligibility criteria included fasting low-density lipoprotein cholesterol level ≤130 mg/dL and an elevated marker of immune activation (either ≥19% of CD8 cells expressing CD38+HLA-DR+ or a high-sensitivity C-reactive protein level ≥2 mg/L).
