In many parts of the world, women travel considerable distances to access abortion services; thus, providing a convenient means of clinical follow-up is important. To compare the efficacy of two forms of follow-up after medical abortion, researchers in Vietnam randomized 1433 women to in-clinic follow-up or in-home semiquantitative pregnancy testing plus phone follow-up. Women in the phone group completed semiquantitative urine pregnancy tests (which yielded estimates of human chorionic gonadotropin levels in five sequential ranges from >25 milli-international units [mIU] to >10,000 mIU) before and after undergoing medical abortion.
