Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) can present as either acute hepatitis or chronically elevated liver enzymes. Because it was previously thought to be a disease primarily of young women, few studies have described AIH in the elderly.
To examine differences in clinical presentation and management of AIH between the elderly and the young, investigators conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis. A database search was conducted using standard systematic review and meta-analytic techniques (PRISMA guidelines) to identify relevant studies published between 1946 and 2013.
