Despite differences in the studies being compared, Mohs outcomes appear to be at least nominally superior to outcomes with other methods.
Authors of this evidence-based review of treatments for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) assessed 118 studies of seven interventions. The reviewers assessed rates of recurrence, quality of life, response to treatment, adverse events, cosmetic appearance, and disease-related death.
Overall, cryotherapy and electrodessication and curettage were associated with the lowest recurrence rates, but most tumors treated by those modalities were small and low-risk. Recurrence after Mohs surgery was 3.0%, compared with 5.4% for simple excision and 6.4% for radiotherapy, resulting in Mohs having a nominally lower recurrence rate. Photodynamic therapy had a high recurrence rate of 26.4%.
