Preterm birth is a public-health burden that is greater in some communities than others. Recurrent preterm births are reduced among women who receive supplemental progesterone during the second and third trimesters (NEJM JW Womens Health Aug 19 2003). Despite the proven efficacy of this strategy, clear benefit in real-world settings is harder to demonstrate.
