Schizophrenia is associated with cognitive impairment, physical comorbidities, and reduced life expectancy. These researchers examined prevalence of psychotic disorders, cognition, and medical comorbidity in a representative sample of individuals with a broad range of treated psychotic disorders.
In a regional population of 1,464,923 adults, the one-month prevalence of treated psychotic disorders was 3.10 per 1000 persons (age range, 18–64); lifetime risk for illness was 3.45 per 1000 (age range, 18–45). There were 1642 participants who met ICD-10 criteria for a psychotic disorder and underwent diagnostic, course of illness, cognitive, medical, and independent-function assessments (mean age, 39; mean illness duration, 16 years; men, 61%).
