Meningococcal infections have never been included in the list of conditions to which HIV-infected individuals are prone, and routine meningococcal vaccination is generally not endorsed for HIV-infected adults in the absence of other risks.
To explore the relation between HIV infection and invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in New York City, researchers matched the roster of individuals who received a diagnosis of IMD between 2000 and 2011 with an AIDS registry that included all AIDS cases diagnosed since 1981 and all HIV infections diagnosed since 2000.
