Previous research suggests that mortality is higher among patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) who present to hospitals during off hours (i.e., nights or weekends) than among those who present during regular hours. In this systematic review and meta-analysis of 48 studies (1.9 million patients), Mayo Clinic investigators determined the relations among time of presentation, door-to-balloon time, and mortality in patients with acute MI.
Compared with patients who presented during regular hours, those who presented during off hours had a 6% relative increase in in-hospital and 30-day mortality.
