Target Population: Acute care hospitals
Out of concern for possible cross-transmission of pathogens, some institutions have either encouraged or required healthcare workers (HCWs) to abandon white coats, ties, or both, or to go “bare below the elbows.” However, there have been almost no well-designed clinical studies addressing this issue. A SHEA working group has now reviewed the available data and published guidance — as well as suggestions for future research — on attire policies for healthcare workers in the acute care hospital setting outside of operating room, perioperative, and procedural areas.
