It was only about 40 years ago that Schnitzler first reported patients with chronic urticaria and a monoclonal gammopathy. Other symptoms associated with this syndrome include fever, fatigue, arthralgia, bone pain, and night sweats. There is no diagnostic test for this syndrome. A long delay between the onset of symptoms and diagnosis, often up to 5 years, is common. Now that effective therapy is available in the form of interleukin-1 receptor antagonists, primarily anakinra, attempts at earlier diagnosis and treatment make sense.
