As life expectancy increases after esophagectomy for cancer, identification of cancers in the intrathoracic gastric tube is increasing, particularly in Asia.
To determine the effectiveness of endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastric tube cancer (GTC), investigators at a single referral center in Japan retrospectively evaluated outcomes in 51 consecutive patients (47 men and 4 women) with 79 primary and metachronous lesions treated by ESD between 1998 and 2011. Of the 79 lesions, 38 met the Japanese standard for an absolute indication for ESD, 31 met expanded indications, and 10 did not meet indication criteria. A team of expert endoscopists performed each procedure.
