Gastric ischemia is considered a rare condition because of the abundant collateral blood supply to the stomach. However it can occur with profound hypotension, sepsis, vascular occlusion, or gastric volvulus.
To summarize current knowledge about gastric ischemia and provide clinical guidance on diagnosis and management, investigators reviewed the literature and presented the clinical, endoscopic, and imaging findings of six cases. Their conclusions and suggestions included the following:
Gastric ischemia is divided into two clinical types: acute (often caused by hypotension or sepsis; can resolve when blood flow is restored) and chronic (caused by an anatomic event obstructing blood flow, such as vascular occlusion or a gastric volvulus).
