Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used by pregnant women, but studies of their possible association with spontaneous abortion have had mixed results. In a historical cohort study of women who were admitted for birth or spontaneous abortion (defined as pregnancy loss before 20 weeks' gestation) to a tertiary-care hospital in Israel, investigators linked medication dispensation records to data on obstetric outcomes. Two groups of NSAID users were analyzed: those exposed to nonselective cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors (e.g., ibuprofen, naproxen, indomethacin) and those exposed to selective COX-2 inhibitors (e.g., celecoxib).
