Although laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) often is performed as primary bariatric surgery because of its relative technical ease and low complication rate, small studies have suggested that it can worsen or even induce gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In a retrospective analysis, investigators used a large national database of bariatric surgery outcomes to explore the effects of bariatric surgery on GERD in 4800 patients who underwent LSG and 33,800 who underwent traditional Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Prior to gastric surgery, GERD was present in half of patients and was severe in about one quarter.
