Infantile hemangiomas (IHs) have been hypothesized to derive from or be related to placental tissue. To better characterize incidence and etiology, investigators examined the placental tissues of 578 pregnant women after delivery and followed their 594 infants. Examination by a pediatric dermatologist was performed within 48 hours of birth; those with IHs were reexamined at 1, 3, 6, and 9 months of age. Mothers of infants without IHs were telephoned at the same intervals, and infants were brought in for examination if new skin lesions arose.
Thirty-two IHs and 2 congenital hemangiomas (CHs) were identified in 29 infants; 3 had multiple lesions. Overall incidence was 4.5% for IH and 0.3% for CH. Only 4% of term infants were affected, but inci…
