Economic considerations have led to increasing use of ambulatory surgical centers for low-to-moderate–risk surgical procedures. Unfortunately, however, little current information is available on the quality of care in these centers.
In a recent retrospective study funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, researchers assessed the rates of clinically significant surgical-site infections (CS-SSIs) within 14 and 30 days after surgery performed at hospital-owned ambulatory centers in eight states.
