Investigators assessed the efficacy of nebulized beclomethasone in preventing wheezing and minimizing symptoms of upper respiratory infection (URI) in children aged 1 to 5 years presenting with viral URI to one of 40 Italian pediatric clinics. In a randomized, double-blind trial, 525 children (mean age, 2 years) received 400 µg of nebulized beclomethasone or placebo twice daily for 10 days. Patients were included if they had experienced at least one previous episode of wheezing with a viral illness during the past year, had no wheezing on the initial presentation, and had no asthma-like symptoms between illnesses.
