Combination therapy with infliximab and azathioprine was previously demonstrated as superior to monotherapy with either agent in achieving remission in Crohn disease (NEJM JW Gastroenterol Apr 14 2010). In the current industry-funded trial, investigators compared the safety and efficacy of the same regimens in patients with ulcerative colitis.
Two hundred and thirty-nine patients with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis were randomized to receive 16 weeks of treatment with infliximab monotherapy (5 mg/kg intravenous at weeks 0, 2, 6, and 14) plus oral placebo capsule daily, azathioprine monotherapy (2.5 mg/kg oral capsule daily) plus placebo intravenous infusions, or the 2 drugs combined.
