The diagnostic criteria for functional dyspepsia (FD), developed by the Rome Foundation working group 7 years ago, removed esophageal reflux-like symptoms and defined epigastric pain syndrome (EPS) and postprandial distress syndrome (PDS). Now, investigators in Canada have evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of the Rome III criteria for FD in a secondary care environment.
Of 4224 consecutive patients referred for evaluation, 1452 patients (mean age, 48; 63% women) completed the Rome III symptom questionnaire and underwent an upper endoscopy. The study's reference standard for FD was any degree of epigastric pain or burning or postprandial fullness or early satiety and the absence of organic disease at endoscopy.
