Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) is endemic in rodents, including mice (in which it causes fatal meningitis) and hamsters (in which infection may be asymptomatic). Zoonotic infection of humans generally results in a mild-to-moderate flu-like illness or aseptic meningitis with few sequelae.
A cluster of four ill organ recipients in Iowa, all of whom had received transplants from a single donor, was reported to the CDC in April 2013. The donor was a 49-year-old man who had been found unresponsive after experiencing headache and vomiting.
