As electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) gain popularity among adolescents (NEJM JW Pediatr Adolesc Med Sep 19 2013), some argue that these devices might be an effective smoking cessation tool. Investigators used data from the 2011–2012 National Youth Tobacco Surveys (~43,000 students in grades 6–12) to study the relation between electronic and conventional cigarette use and quitting smoking.
In 2011 and 2012, 50% of current e-cigarette users were also current conventional smokers (within 30 days).
