Sales of e-cigarettes in the U.S. have doubled every year since they were introduced. As of 2012, an estimated 1.8 million middle school and high school students had ever used them. Nearly 10% of young e-cigarette users have never smoked traditional cigarettes. These researchers assessed trends in exposure to e-cigarette television advertising among youth (ages 12 to 17) and young adults (ages 18 to 24) from 2011 to 2013.
During the study period, exposure to e-cigarette commercials increased 256% among youth and 321% among young adults. One brand (blu eCigs) accounted for about 80% of all exposures.
