How hallucinations and other sensory misperceptions occur in schizophrenia is unsettled. One hypothesis suggests that impairments in “corollary discharge signals” contribute to these phenomena. These signals record the occurrence and location of motor events and inform sensory areas of the brain about them, helping the patient to integrate sensory and motor experiences.
