Zolpidem is commonly prescribed for insomnia in psychiatric patients, but its adverse effects require further study. In a population-based, retrospective, cohort study, researchers used a national Taiwanese insurance claims database to examine the association between zolpidem prescription and hip fracture in adults aged ≥18.
The study population — 6978 patients newly prescribed zolpidem in 2000–2001 and 27,848 nonusers of sedative-hypnotics matched for sex, age, and visit date — were followed for ≤7 years. Overall, zolpidem users had about double the hip fracture rate as nonusers (incident rates, 3.10/1000 person-years vs. 1.39/1000 person-years).
