Candida bloodstream infection is a severe complication in critically ill patients and carries significant morbidity and, in some series, >50% mortality. However, the reasons for poor outcomes among intensive care unit (ICU) patients with candidemia and the factors affecting prognosis are poorly understood. Researchers (with partial industry support) recently investigated this issue using data from a prospective, population-based candidemia surveillance program in five large metropolitan areas of Spain.
Between May 2010 and April 2011, 773 candidemia episodes occurred in a population of almost 10 million covered by the surveillance program. The 168 episodes that developed in adult ICU patients were included in the analysis.
