The introduction of effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) has dramatically decreased AIDS-related mortality, thereby increasing life expectancy and rates of death from non-AIDS conditions (e.g., non-AIDS cancers, liver disease, cardiovascular disease) among HIV-infected individuals.
