Two oral cholera vaccines have been prequalified by the WHO. One of the vaccines, Shanchol — with its lower cost, lack of need for a buffer, and reduced storage volume — has advantages over the other (Dukoral); unlike Dukoral, however, it has not been examined under field conditions. To evaluate the short-term effectiveness of this vaccine, researchers conducted a matched case-control study in Guinea during a cholera outbreak that was declared in February 2012. Interventions during this outbreak included a nonselective mass vaccination program with Shanchol in two prefectures.
