The white skin of vitiligo constitutes a severe disfigurement. Because the skin is mostly devoid of melanocytes, repigmentation is relatively ineffective or cumbersome. Surgical methods have been used to transfer melanocytes to depigmented areas. For example, stabilized noncultured epidermal cell suspensions can be injected into bullae produced by liquid nitrogen or suction in depigmented skin.
