Despite advances in HIV awareness and treatment, about 50,000 people in the U.S. become infected each year. Numerous clinical studies evaluating pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in high-risk men who have sex with men (MSM), heterosexuals, and injection-drug users (IDUs) have shown that consistent use of tenofovir/FTC significantly reduces the risk for HIV acquisition.
