Reproductive health services are an important component of adolescent primary care — but how often are such services delivered? Investigators randomly selected 1000 adolescents (aged 13 to 19) from among the 40,000 cared for by 29 primary care practices in the Philadelphia area. Their records were reviewed for documentation of a sexual history and testing for gonorrhea (GC), chlamydia (CT), or HIV during the 12 months before or the month after the visit.
Overall, 212 (21%) patients had a documented sexual history. Only 26 (about 3%) underwent GC/CT testing, and only 16 (about 2%) had HIV screening. Among the 45 who were sexually active, 15 underwent GC/CT testing and 10 underwent HIV screening. In multivariate analyses, patients aged 15 and …
