As the debate about the value of screening mammography continues, questions also surround the usefulness of tomosynthesis, a technique approved by the FDA in 2011 that produces three-dimensional images of the breast. In an industry-funded, retrospective study based at 13 academic and community centers, investigators compared screening performance before and after tomosynthesis was added to conventional digital mammography. More than 450,000 screening examinations were analyzed.
Results expressed as adjusted rates per 1000 screens showed that adding tomosynthesis resulted in a decline in recalls from 107 to 91, an increase in biopsies from 18 to 19, and an increase in detection of invasive cancer cases from 3 to 4 (P<0.004 for all comparisons…
