The CDC-sponsored Medical Monitoring Project is an ongoing surveillance system focusing on clinical characteristics and behaviors of individuals receiving care for HIV infection. Data were collected for 2009 from 23 project areas in 16 states (plus Puerto Rico) and weighted for probability of selection and nonresponse. A total of 4217 patients aged ≥18 completed the behavioral questionnaire and had clinical data abstracted (overall response rate, 39%).
Extrapolating from the collected data, the researchers described characteristics of the estimated 421,186 adults receiving outpatient HIV care during 2009 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Their sociodemographic characteristics included:
