The association between placenta previa and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants has been inconsistently shown. Now, researchers have evaluated this association by reviewing individual risk factors stratified by parity in a cross-sectional study of all uncomplicated singleton births in Finland from 2000 through 2010.
During the study period, prevalence of placenta previa was 2.5 per 1000 births in nulliparous women and 2.6 per 1000 births in multiparous women. In analysis adjusted for maternal age, smoking, in vitro fertilization, socioeconomic status, and preeclampsia, placenta previa was no longer a risk factor for delivering SGA infants in nulliparous women.
