The effects of obesity on postoperative risks associated with cesarean delivery are not well delineated. In a secondary study of 585 women enrolled between 2008 and 2010, investigators assessed the effects of varying degrees of obesity on postcesarean complications. Participants were categorized as nonobese (body-mass index [BMI] <30 kg/m2), obese (BMI 30–45), or extremely obese (BMI >45).
Postcesarean infectious morbidity (the composite of endometritis and wound infection) occurred in 10.4% of all participants. Some 14.5% of women had BMI >45. Operative time increased with severity of obesity.
