Young adults receiving feedback by text message were less likely to binge drink.
Problem drinking is a major killer, and brief interventions in the emergency department (ED) have been found to reduce hazardous drinking (NEJM JW Emerg Med Aug 24 2012). Investigators examined the efficacy of text messages in decreasing problem drinking in 765 ED patients aged 18–25 who acknowledged past hazardous drinking on a screening test.
Participants were randomized to receive text-messaged queries plus feedback, queries alone, or no intervention. The queries were sent on Thursdays and asked about drinking plans for the weekend; follow-up queries sent on Sundays asked about drinking behaviors that actually occurred.
