Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by antibody deficiency, resulting in recurrent respiratory infections, enteropathy, autoimmunity, and lymphoproliferative disorders. Prevalence in the U.S. population is 1 in 25,000; gene mutations have been linked to disease in some families but are not found in most patients. Diagnostic criteria include age >2 years, IgG and either IgA or IgM levels ≥2 standard deviations below the mean for patient age, and absent isohemagglutinins or poor vaccine response. In this report, researchers in Europe analyzed data on 2212 patients with confirmed CVID.
