Pilomatrix carcinoma (PC) is a rare adnexal tumor arising from the follicular matrical cells. These authors reviewed clinicopathologic features of 13 cases (8 men; median age, 52) from a referral center and 125 cases in the literature.
Face and neck were the most frequent sites. Most tumors were classified as “rapidly growing nodules” (median size, 1.6 cm). Tumors were asymmetric and poorly circumscribed nodular dermal proliferations of basaloid cells and keratinized “ghost” cells, with central foci of necrosis. Pleomorphism and mitotic activity (0–2 per high power field) were noted. Lymphovascular invasion was seen in two cases. All tumors were resected with a margin of 1 to 3 cm.
