The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is a human respiratory pathogen that can cause life-threatening illness. It was first identified in 2012 in Saudi Arabia, and all known infections to date have been linked to countries in the Arabian peninsula. Although human-to-human transmission has been seen in the healthcare setting, the risk for spread within the household has not been clearly defined.
