The vitamin A metabolite retinoic acid plays an important role in the immune regulation of the gut and seems to promote inflammatory responses to dietary antigens. One study has suggested an association between isotretinoin — a form of retinoic acid — and inflammatory bowel disease. In a recent population-based, cross-sectional investigation, researchers looked for a link between oral isotretinoin and celiac disease (CD).
Investigators identified patients with a first incidence of villous atrophy via biopsy reports obtained from all 28 pathology departments in Sweden from 1969 through 2008. The 26,739 case patients were matched (by age, sex, county of residency, and calendar year) with 134,277 non-CD controls selected by a government agency.…
